W latach 1969-1973 oraz 1984-1989 był członkiem angielskiej grupy rockowej Deep Purple (wokal, harmonijka ustna, instrumenty perkusyjne oraz pisanie tekstów). Do zespołu powrócił w 1992.

Ma młodszą siostrę Pauline.
