Jest gitarzystą basowym zespołu Deep Purple (1969-1973, od 1984 r.). Był ponadto członkiem następujących grup:
- Madisons (gitara basowa);
- Episode Six (1964-1969; gitara basowa);
- Rainbow (1979-1984; gitara basowa, wokal wspomagający).

Wydał następujące albumy:
- 1974 r. - "The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast";
- 1978 r. - "Elements";
- 1984 r. - "Mask";
- 1988 r. - "Accidentally on Purpose" (z Ianem Gillanem);
- 2002 r. - "Snapshot";
- 2011 r. - "If Life Was Easy".
